Alien Clearing and Hacking

Alien invasive plants (AIP) is, after climate change, the greatest threat to our natural resources and as such the impact of these plants must be understood and acted against.

The impact of AIP's :
  1. they consume great amounts of water (the Eastern Cape is already a water-scarce area)
  2. may be poisonous to man/animals
  3. break the crucial pollination/vector cycles in cases where birds/insects prefer these flowers and fruit over the indigenous plants
  4. large infestations simply crowd out the local vegetation and create fire risks
  5. shallow rooted trees may lead to devastating erosion in riverbeds and the destruction of wetland areas
